My artistic endeavor is driven by my fascination with the conflict, in its every aspect and form. My means of exploration itself involves conflict, as I confront contradicting visual elements, incompatible materials, ideas and behavior, art and technology. Social phenomena compel me. Assuming that every socially engaged activity bears a political label, I acknowledge the political in my work. Preferring the politics of revolution to the politics of evolution, I punctuate my statements about identity and freedom through alchemy of materials and techniques.

War concerns me because although it is declared by countries, it affects countless individuals, from soldiers to civilians, including mothers and daughters and sons. Wars take place in faraway places such as Afghanistan, Iraq, or Syria, and our lives seems little influenced. This painting serves as a reminder that on the battlefield, there are other lives to whom war is very real; they must either be the ones to carry guns and drop bombs, or have their homes and families wrecked. In the background, I painted drones dropping bombs, representing the mass destruction.

As an artist, I work in a variety of media to create both functional and expressive pieces. In drawing and painting, I combine media (including paper, paint, pens, and pencils) to integrate rich color with line drawings. I build up surfaces, both smooth and rough, out of a belief that a rich surface increases the associations between the work and the world. I build dense color combinations, as well as transfer, combine, or collage sketches and drawings.

Two years ago, easy access to guns in America resulted in the deaths of 28 children and adults at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. With two school-age children of my own, I was incredibly moved and saddened by this sad and terrible event. As an American artist who does not live in the United States, what could I do? What difference can I make? This piece is came directly from me trying to answer these questions. Let us STOP the violence brought about by guns. Let us STOP our gun culture which promotes the idea that more guns lead to more safety. Guns have no place in schools.

We live just across the river from Ferguson, Missouri. Like most Americans, we have watched the senseless violence taking place in our backyard. What can interrupt the horrific cycle; art that asks the difficult questions? I pray so.
