May 21, 2015 Exhibit Premier at Butler University, Indianapolis, IN

participants made art at opening

In late March 2015, AFSC was invited to display “All of Us or None” as a part of Butler University’s Peace Week, sponsored by the Peace and Conflict Studies program. For ten days, the exhibit was displayed inside Irwin Library where thousands of students and community members pass through each week. Through a collaboration with students and faculty, a panel discussion on the exhibit’s themes of militarization of police, drone warfare and the prison industrial complex took place.

To “outgrow” means to mature beyond an old, exhausted way of being into a recreated existence that is better suited for the tasks at hand.  Today we face monumental challenges and decisions as a global community.  For survival, it is critical that we wisen up to the current tired socio-politico-economic status quo and mature beyond it.  While throwing a wrench in the gears may work on a small scale, we can effectively jam the system on a much grander scale by collectively outgrowing it.  By developing beyond it, we render it useless.

Just like migrating birds, we too have a strong internal compass that guides us.  If we are awake and attune to the lessons of nature, we see collaboration and cooperation in the world all around us.  This is what it will take to navigate through the anthropocene.

We can and must help each other flourish, both as members of the human community and as reciprocal members of the larger-than-human community.  It is a choice: we can act destructively, or we can choose to help each other thrive.

Painting is a spiritual-material activity in harmony with life's realities. I attempt to formalize spirit-nebula in the materiality of paint so that memories become expressions of feeling and meaning.

Walking  towards  the United Nations

Cold , crisp day

Streets blocked off.  Barricades.

Only certain streets have  access.  Fixed and limited route.

Hemmed  in  by hundreds of people, shoulder to shoulder.

Police at every turn of the head.

Then the police on horses .  Huge  horses.

FEAR.

Moved to walk on any available sidewalk space.

Away  from the horses.

Blue wall of police,  holding white plastic handcuffs.

Intimidation.   Intimidation.  Intimidation.
