Jun 15, 2015 Chicago Opening

Artist Raul Lopez Vazquez and his work

All of Us or None opened in Chicago at the Hairpin Arts Center on June 12, 2015.  We were so pleased to have contributing artists Eric J. Garcia, Raul Lopez Vazquez, Andrea Gallagher, Lillian Moats and Monica Trinidad present at the opening.  We were honored to have artwork on display that was part of the successful campaign to get reparations for survivors of torture by the Chicago Police Department and an Ofrenda de Gaza, constructed by AFSC's Middle East Program.  We also welcomed the new Midwest Regional Director of AFSC, Brant Rosen.  Photos by Alex Gramigna.

These times call for social activism, in our country, cities, communities, neighborhoods, and schools. As an artist and art teacher, I have seen how socially relevant lessons impact the way students create art. The poster I included in this exhibition depicts a broken Earth, held together by two hands, in front of a black board, Teach Tolerance is written behind it in chalk. Children are constantly exposed to bullying, gender bias, homophobia, police violence, racism, and wars. It is the responsibility of teachers to bring these issues into the classroom in a safe environment.

This banner was created by artists in Maine for use in protests in Ferguson.  It was done quickly and shipped down to people on the front lines and has been in use constantly.

BIO:  ARRT! (Artists Rapid Response Team ) creates positive social change in Maine through the arts. Issue-oriented banners are our speciality!  -- a subsidiary of the Union of Maine Visual Artists.

We have created more than 140 large banners in first three years for 50+ progressive organizations in Maine. Image first, words later, is a guiding principle.

I use printmaking, comics, zines, and animations to narrate the social and physical effects of failed city planning and industrialization. Looking at these attempts of city renewal and revitalization emphasizes how the injustices within the American system can be seen within urban planning, as well as the type of resources that are given and that are taken away from it's people. I focus on how human behavior can affect our environment within landscape imagery since it can describe the people, economic status, culture, and struggles they encounter.

I've always liked minimalism and visual metaphors. The United States appear to be full of contradictions: The land of unlimited possibilities, freedom being the highest goal, while at the same time an incredibly high percentage is behind bars.

I am a self-taught artist that uses materials that are easily accessible, with beginnings in stencil graffiti, later gravitating to other forms of printmaking due to its reproducibility and populist history. As a result of the medium I have adopted a graphic, hand-made style to produce propaganda for street posters, public installations, and sculptures.

Making art that questions our thinking on various social justice issues. What if there were no borders? Why do people have borders but money doesn't? The U.S., Mexico, and Canada have one economy so why do we have three countries? These are just a few questions I like to ponder and hope to create art that will have other people question the justice of our current system.
